Children of Promise After-School Program
Children of Promise After-School Program address the unique needs of the children that are academically at risk in the Pittsburgh and Wilkinsburg communities. They are defined as being at-risk students because they are in danger of not receiving much needed life skills for today’s world. Evidence of this behavior includes poor school performance, poor attendance, drug or alcohol abuse, criminal activity, gang membership, teenage pregnancy, and low self-esteem. This program was established as an after-school program to provide underprivileged students with computer programs, homework assistance and enrichment activities that they would otherwise not receive. Children of Promise Children of Promise After School Program will supply high quality after school care and will promote a system in which school and community-based after school services are coordinated with the school day programs to maximize the benefits of our academically at risk youth. The programs goal is to service 90-100 children, in excess of 80% of whom are classified as having low and moderate incomes.
The Children of Promise After-School Program employs experienced and well-trained education instructors, academic assistances, mentors and college interns. Our program will take place five days per week during the school year. The after-school services will include computer programing (coding), tutoring, homework assistance, snacks and enrichment activities. The enrichment component will be staffed with a ratio of one to twenty. In the computer programing (coding), literacy, math and homework components, the ratio will be one to ten. We will also have a summer camp computer science programs that will be held from June-August.
